IRT is a powerful statistical model that looks at how students respond to individual questions and uses that data to estimate their underlying ability. This allows test designers to craft assessments that are precise, balanced, and fair.

One of the most elegant tools in this mathematical toolkit is the Rasch model. It’s a probabilistic framework that boils the relationship between a student and a question down to a simple equation: the chance of a correct answer depends on the student’s ability relative to the question’s difficulty. That single insight has enormous implications. It means that a student’s score isn’t just a raw count of correct answers—it’s a calibrated estimate of their true proficiency, adjusted for the specific questions they faced. This makes tests fairer and more reliable, and it’s why Rasch models are a gold standard in the field.
