APGA Candidate Alleges Serious Irregularities in Ebonyi South Senatorial By-Election

The candidate representing the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the Ebonyi South senatorial district by-election, Ifeanyi Eleje, has vehemently criticized the electoral process, labeling it as “hugely flawed” and marred by intimidation.

Speaking to reporters in Afikpo, Eleje expressed concern over the conduct of the election, questioning the unprecedented directive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for voters to cast their ballots and leave without a clear explanation of how the accreditation details would be used.

Eleje reported the alleged irregularities to the INEC leadership in the state, expressing disappointment in the lack of response despite assurances.

Describing the election as an off-season one, Eleje expected a higher level of efficiency but instead witnessed the use of authority to intimidate voters, resulting in a low voter turnout.

Christian Elekwa, the Head of Voter Education and Publicity Department at INEC in the state, refuted Eleje’s claims, emphasizing that the commission should not be associated with such irregularities. He clarified that the approved practice was for voters to be accredited and vote immediately, dismissing any insinuations of impropriety.

The outcome of the by-election remains a subject of keen interest as the controversy surrounding its integrity unfolds, raising concerns about the conduct of off-season elections in the region.
