Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has responded to claims that he has flopped in the Premier League, just six months after joining the club. The 25-year-old Nigerian forward is returning to England following a six-season stint with Liverpool, during which he did not make a first-team appearance. Awoniyi then moved to Bundesliga side Union Berlin, where he enjoyed a successful run, scoring 25 goals in 65 appearances. This performance prompted Nottingham Forest to pursue him in the summer as they aimed to strengthen their squad for the Premier League after earning promotion from the Championship.
However, Awoniyi has faced challenges in his new environment, managing only five goals in 19 appearances across all competitions for Forest. Currently, he is sidelined due to an injury. Recently, a Twitter user named Mavs69, under the handle @Mr_jb_Maverick, tagged Awoniyi, along with Claudio Pizzaro and Emmanuel Dennis, in a tweet labeling them as Premier League flops. The tweet stated, “Did you forget or intentionally omitted Kezmam, Claudio Pizzaro, Emmanuel Dennis, Taiwo Awoniyi, and the others that came with higher reputations flopped heavily? The EPL is different in terms of pace and space and you know it, stop being a hypocrite.”
Awoniyi, clearly displeased by the tweet, took to his official Twitter account to criticize Mavs69 for his lack of understanding of football. He stated, “I hope some people can be well informed or educated on what’s football, especially Nigeria.” He expressed his belief that better education on the subject could prevent individuals from making uninformed comments. Awoniyi added, “Unfortunately, the well-educated also have sides and favoritism. That’s why we will end up missing the World Cup.” As he works towards regaining his fitness, the Forest striker is determined to prove his critics wrong.
