Labour Party’s Financial Probe: External Auditor Hired, Says Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, announced that an external auditor has been appointed to scrutinize the party’s financial records. This decision comes in the wake of allegations made by the party’s national treasurer, Oluchi Opara, who accused the national chairman of misappropriating N3.5 billion.

During a press briefing, the party suspended Opara, alleging external influence, while the national chairman, Julius Abure, threatened legal action against her for defamation. In response, Peter Obi emphasized his detachment from the party’s financial management and campaign accounts, stating that an independent party will now oversee the way forward.

Accompanied by Aisha Yesufu, a member of his 2023 campaign team, Obi urged the public to come forward with any information regarding the alleged misappropriation. He assured transparency, noting the existence of accounts managed properly, and commented, “we will account for everything.”

The move to address the allegations with an external auditor signifies a pivotal moment for the Labour Party as it strives for financial transparency.
