NAFDAC Issues Warning About Counterfeit Paracetamol Injection in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised an alarm regarding the presence of counterfeit paracetamol injection being sold under the mislabeling “Paracetamol Injection 300mg/2ml I.M I.V Aminoglycoside Antibacterial.”

After a surveillance activity conducted in FCT, Abuja, NAFDAC discovered the falsified product. Laboratory analysis confirmed that the product only contained paracetamol, despite being labeled as an aminoglycoside antibacterial.

Genuine paracetamol injection is an analgesic and antipyretic used to alleviate mild to moderate pain and fever. Meanwhile, aminoglycosides are a class of antibiotics employed to combat severe, difficult-to-treat bacterial infections. NAFDAC clarified that the counterfeit product does not contain aminoglycoside antibacterial, as indicated on its label.

According to NAFDAC, the authentic Paracetamol Injection 300mg/2ml I.M I.V is manufactured by Shandong Shenglu Pharm. Co. Ltd, China, and marketed by Sifam Life Care Pharmaceutical Ltd., Kano, Nigeria. It is registered by NAFDAC as an analgesic, not an aminoglycoside antibacterial. NAFDAC emphasized that the certificate of registration substantiates the falsification of the paracetamol injection.
