Urgent Call for Preventive Action: HPV Vaccine Crucial to Combat Cancer in Abuja

In a bid to combat cancer, residents of Abuja are urged to take the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. The vaccination campaign is spearheaded by the Primary Health Care Development Agency and Pathfinder International, as they aim to address the prevalence of cervical cancer and genital warts.

During a recent vaccination and sensitization event in Kabusa, a suburb of Abuja, Bayo Ewuola, the Communication Officer of Pathfinder International Nigeria, highlighted the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine in combating genital warts and most cases of cervical cancer. Emphasizing that the vaccine is provided free of charge, Ewuola stressed the importance of girls aged nine to 14 receiving the vaccine to curb the prevalence of cervical cancer at an early age.

Expressing community support for the initiative, Samuel Gbowu, chief of Kabusa, conveyed the community’s openness to programs that enhance the well-being of its people. Represented by Joel Gbowu, the Yarima of the community, Chief Gbowu acknowledged the timeliness of the program in addressing the escalating cases of cancer nationwide.

Notably, the urgency for preventive measures is underscored by the alarming statistic that cervical cancer claims the lives of at least 22 women in Nigeria daily, based on data from 2023. This reinforces the critical need for widespread HPV vaccination to avert the devastating impact of this disease.
