Amidst the economic challenges, individuals accustomed to dining at high-end restaurants are now embracing the more affordable options offered by roadside vendors. Sekinat Shodimu, a fashion designer, exemplifies this shift as she expresses her struggle with the soaring prices of staple foods like rice and noodles. With the quantity of food diminishing and prices skyrocketing, Shodimu and others have found solace in the affordable meals provided by roadside vendors, where a plate of food can range from N300 to N500.
Even those like Mr. Jude Balogun, a trader, who previously favored restaurants, have transitioned to purchasing their daily meals from roadside vendors to mitigate the financial strain. Balogun highlights the drastic cost differences, emphasizing that he spends a mere N2,000 daily on food with the vendors compared to N6,000 at restaurants.
Conversely, Mrs. Romoke Fashina, a Buka owner, voices her concerns over dwindling patronage due to the relentless surge in food prices. Fashina attributes the unprecedented price hikes to both domestic factors and external forces like foreign exchange rates. According to her, this has led to an exodus of customers from formal eateries to the more cost-effective offerings of roadside vendors.
Echoing these sentiments, Mrs. Kelechi Adams, a roadside food vendor, sheds light on the challenges faced by her fellow vendors. She explains that their ability to offer affordable meals stems from minimal overhead costs, contrasting sharply with the escalating expenses faced by conventional local restaurants.
