Nigerian Government Vows to Generate 100,000 Jobs for MSMEs

The Nigerian government has unveiled an ambitious plan to create over 100,000 new jobs by May 29, aiming to address the country’s unemployment challenges. The announcement came from Mr. Temitola Adekunle-Johnson, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Job Creation, during the Inaugural Job Creation and MSME Quarterly Communications Forum in Abuja.

Adekunle-Johnson disclosed that the government’s job creation strategy is in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment. He outlined the targeted creation of 384,000 jobs within four years, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to enhancing employment opportunities.

Moreover, the initiative is set to involve a partnership between the Federal Government and Access Bank. Adekunle-Johnson revealed that Access Bank has committed N50 billion to support MSMEs, offering reduced interest rates of 15% for loans, compared to the prevailing rates of 27-29%. Additionally, the collateral requirements for MSMEs seeking loans ranging from N1 to N3 million have been simplified to facilitate easier access to funding.

In a related development, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, affirmed the government’s dedication to fostering a conducive environment for MSMEs in Nigeria. He stressed the critical role of MSMEs in driving innovation, creating employment, and promoting inclusive growth within the economy.

Idris reiterated the administration’s commitment to enhancing the ease of doing business, ensuring access to finance, providing vital infrastructure, capacity building, entrepreneurial skill development, and fostering market access for MSMEs. He applauded the resilience of MSMEs in navigating through significant challenges, including the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government’s pledge to advance MSMEs and job creation aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, signaling a robust commitment to sustainable economic development and prosperity in Nigeria.
