Nigerian Cardiologist Highlights Challenges of Medicine Access Due to Poor Policies

In a recent address at the Annual General Meeting and Training Workshop of the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN), held at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Muhammad M. Yakubu, a cardiac consultant, emphasized the significant barriers hindering Nigerians from accessing essential medication.

Yakubu stressed the critical importance of ensuring that all citizens have the right to obtain necessary medicines, regardless of their socioeconomic status. He lamented the detrimental impact of inadequate governmental policies on healthcare accessibility, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector.

During the event, Pharm. B.P. Idris, Deputy Director of Pharmaceutical Services at ABUTH, raised concerns about the absence of adequate pricing regulations, which significantly impair the public’s ability to acquire proper medication. She emphasized the urgency of implementing a robust system to uphold product quality, safety, and efficacy, while addressing the pervasive issues of substandard and counterfeit drugs in the community.

Alh. Abdulraheem Sallau, Director of Administration at ABUTH and the chairman of the gathering, commended the IMAN executive members for their steadfast dedication to advancing the association’s mission. He urged all participants to remain resolute in their support and efforts towards realizing the organization’s objectives in improving healthcare outcomes for all Nigerians.
