Former Labour Party Deputy National Chairman, Callistus Okafor, has raised concerns about the legitimacy of Julius Abure’s occupancy of the national chairmanship seat. Okafor emphasized that Abure was not elected through a convention and criticized the planned convention by the current National Working Committee.
Speaking on an Arise TV program, Okafor highlighted the lack of elected delegates in Abure’s proposed convention and the absence of ward, local government, and state congresses. He pointed out that the last convention held by the Labour Party was in 2014, and Abure’s position as national chairman was not ratified through a convention.
Okafor called for Abure to step down and allow for a new convention to elect national officers. He also urged for an all-inclusive stakeholder meeting to ensure unity within the party.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has also been involved in the situation, with Okafor suggesting that they have the power to intervene. He questioned Abure’s extension of tenure and emphasized the need for transparency and inclusivity in the decision-making process of the Labour Party.
