In February 2024, Nigeria saw a significant increase in the average cost of a healthy diet, with individuals now spending N938 per day on nutritious food, up from N858 in January. This data was revealed in the latest Cost of A Healthy Diet (CoHD) report released by the National Bureau of Statistics in partnership with Gain Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition.

The report highlighted regional disparities in food costs, with the South West region recording the highest average CoHD at N1,157 per adult per day, compared to N723 in the West. This rise in food prices is occurring against a backdrop of overall inflation in the country.

It is important to note that the CoHD is not directly comparable to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which was at 31.70 per cent in February. While the food CPI increased by approximately 4 per cent between January and February, the CoHD saw a sharper rise of 9 per cent during the same period.

This data underscores the challenges faced by many Nigerians in accessing affordable and nutritious food. As food prices continue to climb, it is crucial for policymakers and stakeholders to address the root causes of this trend and work towards ensuring food security for all citizens.
