ASCSN President Condemns Nigeria’s Hike in Electricity Tariff

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, has expressed deep concern over the recent increase in electricity tariffs in the country. In a statement to the press in Abuja, ASCSN President Etim Okon criticized the move by the Federal Government, calling it a “misplacement of priority, anti-people policy, and unacceptable.”

The Federal Government announced the hike in electricity tariffs on April 3, raising the rate from N66/kwh to N225/kwh for those receiving 20 hours of power supply per day. Okon strongly condemned this decision, stating that it is unjustifiable and could lead to social unrest. He emphasized that the current economic challenges in Nigeria, coupled with stagnant wages and high living costs, make this increase particularly burdensome for the average citizen.

Okon pointed out that the government’s focus on revenue generation at the expense of the welfare of its citizens is troubling. Despite promises of improved power supply with the tariff hike, many Nigerians are still grappling with the effects of fuel subsidy removal and lack of consistent electricity supply. He urged the government to prioritize stabilizing the economy and supporting its people before implementing such drastic measures.

In light of these concerns, ASCSN is calling on the government to reconsider its decision and revert to the previous electricity tariff. The organization believes that a more balanced approach is needed to address the country’s economic challenges without further burdening its citizens.
