Nigerian Government Launches AfriGO National ID Card with Payment Functionality

The Nigerian Federal Government, in partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS), has introduced an innovative identity solution with integrated payment capabilities for a wide range of social and financial services.

In a recent announcement, Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, revealed the launch of AfriGO, a cutting-edge National ID card embedded with verifiable identity features, authorized by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007.

This groundbreaking card is designed to meet the growing need for physical identification, allowing cardholders to verify their identity, access both government and private social services, promote financial inclusion for marginalized individuals, empower citizens, and foster greater engagement in nation-building efforts.

To obtain the card, individuals must be registered citizens or legal residents with a National Identification Number (NIN). Compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, the card is set to become the primary national identity card in Nigeria. Beyond identification purposes, cardholders can also utilize the card as a debit or prepaid card by linking it to their preferred bank accounts.

By providing access to various government initiatives, the card aims to support eligible individuals, particularly those excluded from financial and social services, in accessing essential programs and services.

This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing identity verification and financial inclusion in Nigeria, ultimately empowering citizens and promoting inclusive growth and development.
