The governments of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara have taken the Federal Government to the Supreme Court, seeking a restraining order to halt the full implementation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s naira redesign policy. The three states are concerned about the policy’s impact on their residents.
In the lawsuits, the plaintiffs are the Attorneys‑General and Commissioners of Justice of the three states, while the Attorney‑General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, is the sole respondent. Their lawyer, Abdul‑Hakeem Mustapha, SAN, filed an ex‑parte motion on their behalf, urging the court to grant an interim injunction. The injunction would prevent the Federal Government—whether acting directly, through the CBN, commercial banks, or its agents—from enforcing the termination of the February 10 deadline, after which the older versions of the ₦200, ₦500 and ₦1,000 notes would cease to be legal tender. Details later…
