The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has withdrawn its $665 million tax fine against MTN Ghana, according to a statement released on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange news service. In January, the GRA issued a notice of tax liability to Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana) for approximately GHS 8.2 billion (about $665 million at current exchange rates), including penalties and interest. The authority alleged that MTN had under‑reported its revenue in Ghana by roughly 30 percent for the period 2014‑2018 and was auditing the company for those years.
MTN explained that the tax assessment was dropped after extensive discussions between MTN Ghana, its parent company, and the relevant Ghanaian authorities. The statement noted that the assessment had initially been temporarily withdrawn to allow a 21‑day window for further engagement. Following “extensive and productive discussions” during that period, the GRA fully withdrew the assessment on 3 February 2023.
MTN reaffirmed its commitment to the highest standards of tax compliance and responsible corporate citizenship, assuring shareholders and other stakeholders of its dedication to these principles. The company also expressed confidence in Ghana’s economy and confirmed that it will continue with its planned investment and development initiatives in the country.
