The Brickhall School in Abuja has resumed classes after closing for a week to mourn the tragic death of four-year-old pupil Miguel Ovoke. Miguel passed away on April 24, 2024, after choking on a piece of meat offal from his meal brought from home.

In a statement signed by the school management, condolences were expressed to the family of the deceased pupil. The medical report indicated that Miguel was brought to the Excel Specialist Hospital in Abuja due to aspiration on meat while feeding at school. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he was declared dead upon arrival.

Senator Joy Emodi, the founder and Chairman of the school, extended her condolences to Miguel’s family and ensured full cooperation with the relevant authorities to address the tragedy. The school suspended classes for over a week to allow the community to mourn and reflect on the loss.

The management reiterated its commitment to the well-being and education of all students and emphasized that its duty of care has been efficient, with trained staff in emergency procedures and first aid. They are working closely with medical professionals and law enforcement to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The statement urged everyone connected to the tragedy to honor Miguel’s memory with dignity and peace, while transparency is maintained in engaging with the family and seeking resolution.
