The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called upon the Federal Government to uphold transparency in executing the student loan scheme. Pedro Obi, the National President of NANS, emphasized the importance of appointing individuals with impeccable integrity and competence to oversee the distribution of the loans, ensuring the scheme’s success and long-term viability.

Expressing concern over the reported deportation of Nigerian students from Teesside University in the United Kingdom due to outstanding school fees, NANS urged the Federal Government to take prompt and decisive action to safeguard the rights and futures of students studying abroad.

NANS commended the administration led by President Bola Tinubu for initiating the student loan scheme and urged the government to engage all relevant stakeholders in its implementation process.

The student body highlighted the potential benefits of the loan scheme, stating that if properly executed, it could alleviate financial burdens for many students and their families, as well as mitigate the trend of Nigerian students seeking education abroad.

In a statement, NANS underscored the need for transparency and accountability in the disbursement of loans, emphasizing the importance of engaging diverse stakeholders, including academia, finance, and civil society, to ensure fair and balanced administration. Additionally, the association called for the establishment of transparent monitoring mechanisms to track fund allocation and address any discrepancies through regular audits, public reporting, and feedback channels for students.

The statement reflects NANS’ commitment to ensuring that the student loan scheme serves its intended purpose effectively while maintaining integrity and accountability in its implementation.
