In a significant move aimed at addressing the ongoing armed conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, the Nigerian Government has thrown its support behind the ceasefire proposal put forth by United States President Joe Biden. Describing it as the “best way forward,” the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, emphasized the importance of immediate global action to de-escalate the extreme violence against non-combatants in the Israel-Palestine conflict.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Minister Tuggar urged world leaders and the international community to embrace the Biden Ceasefire proposal. He emphasized the need for intensified efforts toward a speedy resolution of the conflict and the immediate cessation of violence in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of providing lifesaving humanitarian supplies and services for affected civilians.
The statement expressed Nigeria’s assurance of support to the United States in bringing about a complete cessation of violence and an end to the loss of human lives and man-made humanitarian crises. Minister Tuggar emphasized the concern about the ongoing carnage and stressed the need for justice, cautioning against revenge and highlighting the Biden Plan as a clear path towards progress and peace.
President Biden’s proposal includes a comprehensive deal aimed at achieving a permanent ceasefire, providing humanitarian aid, releasing hostages, and implementing a major reconstruction plan to rebuild infrastructure such as homes, schools, and hospitals. Nigeria views the Biden plan as the most effective approach for all parties involved and believes it can prevent further tragic incidents like the recent deaths of over 200 people at the Nuseirat Refugee Camp.
The Israel-Hamas conflict, which began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant casualties and humanitarian crises. According to figures released by the Hamas-run health Ministry in Gaza, nearly 37,000 Palestinians have been killed, and over 82,000 have been injured since the conflict began.
