Arsenal legend Ian Wright has criticised UEFA’s suspension rules following Spain’s dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Germany, which secured their place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.
Spain’s triumph came at a significant cost, as key players Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand received their second yellow cards of the tournament, resulting in suspensions for the upcoming semi-final clash against France.
Under current UEFA regulations, yellow cards are reset after the quarter-finals, ensuring that players booked in the semi-finals won’t miss the final. However, those who accumulate two yellow cards before the semi-finals are ineligible for the last-4 fixtures.
Wright expressed his frustration on ITV, stating, “That’s ridiculous. We are five games in now so you can get booked in the first game and then the fourth game and miss the semi-final. It’s too much. When these players [for Spain] settle down, some of them will realise they are missing a semi-final.”
