Paramount Ruler of Etung Local Government Calls for Release of Former Special Adviser Oscar Ofuka
The paramount ruler of Etung Local Government Area in Cross River State, His Royal Majesty (HRM) Emmanuel Oru-Ojong, has appealed to Governor Bassey Otu to release his subject, former Special Adviser to ex-Governor Ben Ayade on Cocoa Development and Control, Oscar Ofuka. Ofuka has been detained for over a week, sparking concerns about his well-being and the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
According to HRM Oru-Ojong, Ofuka’s detention is a political witch hunt, and he has urged Otu to set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the allegations against Ofuka instead. The monarch claimed that Ofuka’s ordeal is being masterminded by his political foes, who are willing to go to any length to bring him down.
HRM Oru-Ojong made the call through Ntufam Odu Ndep, Chairman of the Crisis Management Committee of Mbume Blocks of Clans, comprising Abia, Bendeghe Ekiem, and Etomi communities in Etung LGA. He emphasized that Ofuka has not committed any offense that would warrant his arrest and detention.
The monarch accused government officials and security operatives of perpetrating an abuse of office against Ofuka, citing his record of discharging his duties in the capacity officially conferred upon him. He reminded Otu that, as a former federal lawmaker, he should not knowingly condone such actions.
HRM Oru-Ojong also appealed to Otu to release Ofuka once he recuperates at the hospital, as he cannot be held directly responsible for any presumed errors of the past administration. The monarch’s call for Ofuka’s release has sparked widespread support from the community, with many calling for his immediate and unconditional release.
The fate of Ofuka remains uncertain, as his detention continues to spark controversy in the region.
