Apple’s 5G Revolution: Proprietary Modem on Track for 2025 iPhone Debuts

Apple Prepares to Ditch Qualcomm, Launches In-House 5G Modem in 2025

In a significant move, Apple is reportedly preparing to debut its proprietary 5G modem, which has been in development for several years. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the Cupertino-based tech giant plans to introduce the new modem with two iPhone models in 2025, marking a significant shift away from Qualcomm’s technology.

The two iPhone models, the iPhone SE 4 and an “ultra-slim” iPhone 17, are expected to launch in 2025, with the iPhone SE 4 targeting a Q1 2025 release and the iPhone 17 Slim debuting in Q3 2025. Both handsets will not use Qualcomm’s 5G modem, instead featuring Apple’s in-house technology.

Kuo suggests that Apple aims to slowly phase out outsourced modems, transitioning to use its proprietary technology. This move comes after Apple extended its deal with Qualcomm to 2026 earlier this year, with the development of its in-house modem reportedly delayed.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon had expressed happiness with the relationship with Apple, but it remains unclear if the rest of the iPhone 17 series, which is also expected to launch next year, will still use Qualcomm’s cellular technology.

In a separate development, analyst Jeff Pu claims that the upcoming iPhone 16 models will still use Qualcomm 5G modems, but only the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max may feature the latest Snapdragon X75 modem. The standard variants are expected to retain the X70 modem, which powers cellular functions across the entire iPhone 15 lineup.

The move towards an in-house 5G modem could be a significant step for Apple, allowing the company to gain greater control over its technology and potentially improve performance and efficiency. However, it remains to be seen how this shift will impact the company’s relationships with Qualcomm and other suppliers.
