TikTok in Trouble: US Government Sues Over Children’s Online Privacy Concerns
The ongoing battle between TikTok and the US government has taken a new turn. This time, the focus is on the popular social media platform’s handling of children’s online privacy. The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against TikTok, accusing it of violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
COPPA, passed over two decades ago, requires social media platforms to get parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13. Most popular platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, have chosen to simply not allow users under the age of 13 to create accounts. TikTok, however, has taken a different approach.
In response to the allegations, the platform allows children under 13 to join, but with restrictions. They can only view content, but cannot post or interact with adults. While TikTok claims to have taken measures to ensure minors’ safety, the Justice Department maintains that the platform has repeatedly failed to protect children’s privacy.
This isn’t the first time TikTok has faced scrutiny over its handling of user data. In 2019, Musical.ly, the app that eventually became TikTok, was sued by the FTC for violating COPPA. The platform eventually paid $5.7 million to settle the allegations.
The FTC will continue to use its full scope of authorities to protect children online, especially as more sophisticated digital tools are being developed to surveil and profit from young users’ data.
TikTok’s defense is that it has already addressed many of the concerns raised, citing improved safeguards and features designed specifically to protect minors. The platform emphasizes that it is committed to ensuring a safer online experience for all users.
