Trump Defends Medal of Freedom as Better than Medal of Honor, Sparks Outrage

US Presidential Candidate Faces Backlash for Comments on Awards

US President Donald Trump found himself embroiled in yet another controversy this week after making questionable comments about a civilian award he conferred upon a donor. Speaking at a campaign event with Jewish supporters in New Jersey, Trump boasted that the Presidential Medal of Freedom, given to Miriam Adelson, was better than the Medal of Honor, the highest military honor given to soldiers.

Trump claimed the civilian award was equivalent to the Congressional Medal of Honor, which is untrue. He then proceeded to argue that the recipients of the Congressional Medal tend to be in poor health or worse due to their service, contrasted with Adelson, who was characterized as a “healthy and beautiful woman”. The remark sparked widespread backlash among politicians, veterans, and the general public, with many decrying Trump’s supposed disrespect towards soldiers and military sacrifices.

Spokespersons from Democratic contender Kamala Harris’ campaign, Democratic Congressman Dean Phillips, and the veteran-focused organization VoteVets all sharply criticized Trump for his comments, accusing him of failing to comprehend the true meaning of sacrifice and service.

Even Florent Groberg, a former soldier and Medal of Honor recipient, took issue with Trump’s claims, stating that the two awards are distinct with different criteria and significance.

Moreover, Trump has a history of making disparaging remarks about soldiers killed, wounded or captured. Previous incidents include an alleged rejection of a US military cemetery visit during a presidential trip to France due to its perceived “Losers”, and an insult on US Senator John McCain, a decorated Vietnam war veteran.

In this instance, Trump’s vice presidential running-mate J.D. Vance responded to the criticism by arguing that Trump merely complimented a person he “liked”. The controversy underlines concerns about Trump’s track record with veterans and the military, drawing further attention to the heated nature of this year’s presidential election.
