Rivers State High Court Bars APC from Conducting Congresses

A State High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has issued a restraining order, preventing the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from conducting ward and local government congresses. The ruling was made by Justice Godwin Ollor, who presided over the case.

According to the court’s decision, the defendants, including APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Secretary Surajudeen Ajibola-Basiru, and the APC itself, are prohibited from conducting the ward, local government, and state congresses scheduled for October 11th, 16th, and 26th, 2024.

The plaintiffs in the case, Peter Ohochukwu and Hajia Ndidi-Chukwuma, had brought a motion ex parte to the court, seeking the restraining order. The other defendants in the case include the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigerian Police, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In his ruling, Justice Ollor also restrained the national leadership of the party from enacting any plan to suspend the Emeka Beke-led executives of the party in the state. The case has been adjourned to September 9th for a hearing of the motion on notice.

This development comes just 24 hours after the sacked chairman, Tony Okocha, announced that the party would not participate in the upcoming council polls. The court’s decision is likely to have significant implications for the APC’s plans in Rivers State.
