A New Chapter for APC as Two Lawmakers Defect from Labour Party in Cross River State
In a significant development, two lawmakers from the Labour Party (LP) in Cross River State, Nigeria, have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Brian Odey, representing Yala state constituency 1 in the House of Assembly, and Martins Achadu, representing Yala 2 State Constituency, officially joined the APC over the weekend.
The defection of the two lawmakers is seen as a significant blow to the LP, which has been plagued by leadership tussles. The APC, on the other hand, is likely to benefit from the experience and passion of the new defectors for their constituencies.
The formal reception of the defectors was held in Yahe Ward of Yala LGA, where Odey joined the APC. Both factions, led by Ogar Osim and John Ushie, have informed the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) that they are ready to field candidates for the upcoming Council elections on October 25, 2024.
In his remarks, Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, described the move as a strategic decision for the APC. He praised Odey and Achadu for their dedication and commitment to their constituents, saying it will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and success of the party.
The APC’s gain is likely to strengthen its position in the state, particularly ahead of the upcoming elections. The party’s ability to attract experienced lawmakers like Odey and Achadu could be a significant factor in its success.
As the political landscape in Cross River State continues to evolve, the defection of these two lawmakers is likely to have far-reaching implications for both parties. Only time will tell how this development will shape the future of politics in the state.
