The Labour Party in Ekiti State dismissed on Tuesday the alleged collapse of its structures in the South West to the All Progressives Congress. LP State Chairman Odunayo Okunade called the claim “untrue” and described it as “a failed plot to distract party faithful and the general public from their support for LP presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi.”

The allegation originated from Banji Omotoso, who on Monday said that, as Southwest Chairman of the party, he had led the entire LP structure in the geopolitical zone to the APC. In a statement issued in Ado Ekiti titled “Banji Omotoso and his Cohorts are Unknown in LP,” the state chairman countered that those presenting themselves as party leaders in the Southwest were impostors.

Okunade said, “Our attention has been drawn to Banji Omotoso’s claim that the South West LP has collapsed its structures in the zone to the APC. This is not only untrue, but a vicious claim by dubious political vultures who aim to distract the Obedient movement in order to make unholy financial gains in camps that can accommodate them.” He added that the LP first encountered Omotoso in 2020 when the individual attempted to use the party’s platform and ideology for personal gain.

The same political scavengers, led by Omotoso, allegedly impersonated LP leadership in Ekiti State on 28 May 2022 and were subsequently silenced by the party. “In this present case, the leadership of the party is taking the matter seriously and will pursue legal action against him and his derailed fold,” Okunade said. “No amount of calumny can distract the LP faithful and the public from their support for Mr Peter Obi.”

He concluded by urging the public to disregard Omotoso’s claim and remain focused on the mission to elect Mr Peter Obi as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the February 25 presidential election.
