The Ondo State High Court in Akure, the state capital, sentenced two men, Ayuba Idris and Tasur Abubakar, to death by hanging for the murder of a couple. The defendants were arrested by the state police command in 2019 after killing Kwaku Kwakye and his wife, Tope Kwaky, at their home in Ojomo Akintan Estate along the Ilesa/Owo Expressway, Akure. Police said the two men had been security guards employed by the victims before committing the murders and fleeing the scene; they were apprehended shortly thereafter.

The duo faced five charges: conspiracy, armed robbery and murder. The case had been ongoing since 2019. In delivering the judgment, Justice Williams Olamide noted that the prosecution had failed to prove the defendants’ guilt on counts one and two, resulting in their discharge and acquittal on those charges. However, the court sentenced them to seven years’ imprisonment on count three, which pertained to conspiracy. The court also found the defendants guilty of counts four and five and imposed the death penalty by hanging for those offenses.
