Phillip Okey‑Igwe, the running mate of the late Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Abia State, Prof. Uche Ikonne, has challenged the party’s attempt to replace him, insisting that he remains the substantive deputy governorship candidate. The controversy arose after reports suggested that Jasper Uche had been selected as the running mate for the new PDP governorship candidate, Chief Okay Ahiwe.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Okey‑Igwe affirmed that his candidacy continues to be valid under the constitution and the Electoral Act. He thanked his supporters, fans, and all well‑meaning Abians for their phone calls and expressions of concern regarding the alleged substitution. He emphasized that he has devoted his soul, resources, and energy to securing victory for the party since his nomination alongside his late boss.
Okey‑Igwe acknowledged the painful loss of Prof. Ikonne, describing it as “the will of divinity,” but maintained that his own candidacy remains intact. He accused “certain entrenched interests” opposed to what he and the late professor represented from attempting to undermine his position. He warned those forces to exercise caution, noting that any unlawful attempt to subvert his candidacy would not only fail but also jeopardize the PDP’s governorship bid, effectively “pulling the rug from under the feet of our great party.”
Finally, Okey‑Igwe urged his supporters to remain calm, law‑abiding, and steadfast in the pursuit of victory.
