Cardiovascular Disease: Medical expert cautions against smoking

To lower cardiovascular risks in the human body and curb blood vessel problems, the Chief Medical Director, (CMD), Federal University Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FETHI) Professor Ebenezer Adekunle Ajayi has warned against smoking and unhealthy food choices.

Professor Ajayi who noted that the heart and the vascular system are central to life and healthy living said, “ the risk is gradable from low to high# and in some instances very high but no adult is entirely free of risks, hence a low risk is never no risk.

“Therefore, individuals must learn to take responsibility for a healthy living while stakeholders in the health system must upgrade their supportive involvements to reduce morbidity and mortality arising from cardiovascular disease”.

The Professor of Medicine gave the submission yesterday while delivering the 69th inaugural lecture of the Ekiti State University, EKSU in Ado-Ekiti.

Professor Ajayi at the inaugural lecture titled:” Low Risk, Not No Risk: The Travails of a LifeTime, Pump Fighting Fate stated that “the older we get, the higher the risk and the more the number of individual risk factors the higher the risk as well

”It has been established that the earlier in life attention is paid to mitigating the impact of risk factors, the better the quality of life and the longer the time to the onset of the first cardiovascular disease event”

The lecturer advised individuals to quit tobacco use while those who are yet to start smoking, must never begin.

“ Make healthy food choices, be physically active, the government should provide safe sidewalks to promote physical activity”

The EKSU Vice Chancellor, Professor Edward Olanipekun while appreciating the inaugural lecturer for the submission stressed that an “inaugural lecture is an avenue to share with the audience scholarly contribution to the university

The inaugural lecture was attended by an array of academics and other dignitaries including the monarch of the lecturer’s hometown, Oba Sunday Adewumi, Okinbaloye, Onigogo of Igogo Ekiti.
