Twenty‑four teams from across the country met the February 15 deadline to register for the inaugural Lagos Athletics Club Series. The four‑leg tournament will kick off with its first leg at the Yaba College of Technology sports complex on February 19.
Technical Director of the Lagos State Athletics Association, Enefiok Udo‑Obong, confirmed that the 24 registered teams will compete in a one‑day championship, with additional teams slated to join in the second leg. He also noted that athletes from Togo and the Benin Republic have formed joint squads with Nigerian runners for the event. “We are excited by the turnout,” Udo‑Obong said. “At the deadline, 24 teams were confirmed for the launch this Sunday. The strong interest in the tournament is encouraging, and everything is set for the kick‑off. We hope to start early and aim to wrap up by 5 p.m.”
Udo‑Obong emphasized that the event aims to foster teamwork among athletes while also uncovering new talent for national representation in major competitions. “Our goal goes beyond winning; we want to identify athletes who can represent the country. We have also secured World Athletics’ approval to recognize any records set during the tournament.”
Board member of LASAA, Dr Modupe Ogunbanjo, urged athletes to stay away from doping, stressing that there are no shortcuts to success. “We are concerned about the welfare of our athletes, and that remains our priority. While we cannot meet every need, we will do our best within our means. However, we must warn athletes against performance‑enhancing drugs, which could jeopardize their careers and tarnish their global reputation.”
