The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council in Rivers State has accused former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi of secretly working for the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. In a statement released in Port Harcourt on Monday, Chief Ogbonna Nwuke, the PDP’s Director of Publicity and Communications, identified Amaechi as a member of a “wicked cabal” responsible for the nation’s fuel and naira shortages. Nwuke challenged Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, to deny his involvement in creating hardships for citizens and alleged that Amaechi had recently reconciled with members of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, holding secret meetings with Atiku and others.
The statement warned that Nigerians have been forced to “go through the eye of the needle” to meet daily needs, describing the cabal’s actions as a deliberate attempt to influence the upcoming elections. It claimed that credible intelligence links Amaechi to the naira crisis, fuel scarcity, and the suffering of ordinary Rivers people. Nwuke urged Amaechi to refute these accusations and to deny any collaboration with Atiku that undermines the aspirations of southern Nigerians.
Nwuke also dismissed claims by APC governorship candidate Tonye Cole that Governor Nyesom Wike was secretly moving to join the APC. He argued that such comments portrayed Cole as a political neophyte and that Wike has consistently maintained a principled stance, refusing to abandon the party he helped build. According to the statement, Wike and the G5 remain committed to the PDP to protect the party’s core values from “power mongers and selfish politicians.” The PDP asserted that Wike has no intention, now or in the near future, to defect to the APC, whether through a “front or back door.”
The statement further criticized Cole’s understanding of politics, labeling him an outsider with poor judgment of the nation’s circumstances. It expressed confidence that Rivers PDP candidates are poised to win the elections on 25 February and 11 March 2023, praising supporters for their tireless efforts. The PDP described Cole’s remarks about Governor Wike as those of a political novice whose motives as a Southerner are questionable.
In response, the Amaechi‑led APC in Rivers State called the PDP and Governor Wike “confused and clueless.” APC Publicity Secretary Darlington Nwauju said the allegations against Amaechi had collapsed “like a pack of cards.” He noted that Governor Wike, who leads the PDP faction making these claims, had recently boasted on live television that Amaechi no longer had access to Aso Rock Villa. Nwauju argued that the PDP’s accusations are mere “claptraps” by failed politicians, and that even the author of the statement does not believe in what he signed.
