‘You’ve deviated’ — US Treasury Sec Bessent slams IMF

The United States of America Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, has lashed out at the International Monetary Fund, IMF, hinting that the United Nations financial agency has lost its mission.

Bessent disclosed this in his speech at the 2025 Spring Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank.

He emphasised that the IMF has deviated from promoting global monetary cooperation and financial stability to climate change, gender, and social issues.

He noted that issues surrounding climate change, gender, and social issues are not the IMF’s mission.

“The IMF was once unwavering in its mission of promoting global monetary cooperation and financial stability. Now, it devotes disproportionate time and resources to working on climate change, gender, and social issues. These issues are not the IMF mission,” he said in a viral video of his speech released on Wednesday on X by a news account, Rapid Response 47.

Recall that this year’s Spring Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank began on Monday the 21st and are expected to end on the 26th of April.

The IMF, in its ‘Fiscal Monitor’ report from the 191-nation group released Wednesday, projects the overall US federal deficit will fall to 6.5 per cent of gross domestic product this year, down from 7.3 per cent in 2024.
