In a scathing critique, Hajiya Nàja’atu Mohammed, a prominent northern female politician, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of prioritizing the interests of the Yoruba people, a dominant ethnic group in the southwestern region of Nigeria. Speaking on the maiden episode of the Political Advantage Platform podcast, hosted by Hadiza Malumfashi, Nàja’atu asserted that the president is using national resources to develop his home region, fostering regionalism at the expense of national unity.
Nàja’atu, who previously served on Tinubu’s presidential campaign team, emphasized that her criticism is not personal, but rather a reflection of her concern for the country’s well-being. She argued that the president’s administration has failed to address critical issues and has instead chosen to focus on developing the South-West, where he hails from. This, she believes, has led to economic hardship and suffering for citizens across the country.
The politician pointedly asked if the country is being “vulcanized” into ethnic fiefdoms, where regional interests take precedence over national concerns. She also warned that when a government ignores the voices of its people and listens only to external bodies, the result is a broken economy and a populace in distress. Nàja’atu’s comments come as Nigeria grapples with insecurity and economic challenges, which she believes will persist if the government fails to address the root causes of these issues.
Nàja’atu expressed disappointment with Tinubu’s administration, noting that many Nigerians had high hopes for his leadership due to his experience as governor of Lagos.
