China has blocked the new artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT due to concerns that its American owners might use the tool to disseminate propaganda within the country. ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI—founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and others—has only been publicly available since November. This AI tool can produce high-quality essays with minimal human input and generate text on any subject in response to prompts or queries.

In response to these capabilities, major tech companies in China have been instructed not to offer ChatGPT to the public, particularly those involved in the social media app sector. The ban stems from the chatbot’s tendency to generate replies that the Chinese Communist Party would typically censor, according to reports from the Daily Mail. ChatGPT now joins a list of platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, and certain Google services, that are also blocked throughout the country.

Despite the restrictions, users are reportedly finding ways to access ChatGPT services by using virtual private networks and various ‘mini programs’ developed by third parties. China is known for its stringent control over the internet and media, regulating news, online environments, and social media platforms. An executive from a prominent tech company in China remarked, “Our understanding from the beginning is that ChatGPT can never enter China due to issues with censorship, and China will need its own versions of ChatGPT.”

Additionally, concerns regarding the impact of AI tools like ChatGPT on education have been raised globally. The ability of the chatbot to produce high-quality essays with minimal human input has led many universities to view this feature as a potential license for students to cheat.
