The world’s leading oil corporation, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, said Nigeria’s crude oil output remained the topmost in Africa, with 1.544 million barrels per day (bpd) in May 2025, excluding condensate.
OPEC disclosed this in its 2025 Monthly Oil Market Data released on Monday.
Nigeria’s crude production output showed a slight increase of 1.44 percent from the 1.522 million bpd recorded in April 2025, OPEC noted, quoting secondary sources.
While Nigeria’s crude oil output surged by 1.44 percent, OPEC data puts Nigeria’s regional competitors, Libya at 1.36 million bpd, Algeria at 920,000 bpd, and Congo at 268,000 bpd.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission’s crude oil production figure announced recently indicated a decrease to 1,452,941 barrels of oil per day (bpd) in May 2025.
The development comes as the nation’s N54.99 trillion 2025 budget is based on $75 per barrel, 2.06 million bpd output, and a foreign currency exchange rate of N1,500 per dollar.
However, Gbenga Komolafe, the commission’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), NUPRC, has assured a boost in Nigeria’s crude oil production capacity in the coming months.
