Ibrahim Dankwambo, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party and former Governor of Gombe State, was declared the winner of the Gombe North senatorial district on early Monday. He defeated the incumbent senator, Sa’idu Alkali, of the All Progressives Congress. It is noteworthy that Dankwambo had previously lost to Alkali in the 2019 elections after completing two terms as governor.
The results for the Gombe Local Government Area, which comprises the district and federal constituency, were delayed. The collation officer, Professor Adam Abass, arrived at Malam Sidi Primary School around 2 a.m., and the collation process began at 3:45 a.m. Professor Gurama Abubakar, the returning officer, announced Dankwambo as the winner, stating, “Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of the PDP, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared and is returned elected.” Dankwambo received 143,155 votes, significantly surpassing his closest rival, Alkali, who garnered 77,948 votes.
In another development, Yaya Tongo of the Peoples Democratic Party successfully won re-election to represent the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency. According to the returning officer, Professor Shehu Hassan, Tongo secured 105,799 votes, defeating his closest rival from the APC, who received 54,141 votes.
