Flooding Alert Issued For 9 Northern States In Nigeria

The Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Center has issued a high alert for nine Northern states in Nigeria, warning of potential flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025. According to a circular signed by Director Usman Abdullahi Bokani of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the affected states are likely to experience heavy rainfall that could trigger flooding.

The warning lists Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Borno as states at risk, with Adamawa also being mentioned. Specific towns identified as vulnerable include Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo in Adamawa, and Katsina town, Kaita, and Bindawa in Katsina. Other locations under watch are Gwaram in Jigawa, Nafada in Gombe, Ngala in Borno, Sumaila in Kano, Anka in Zamfara, and Makira in Sokoto. In Bauchi State, the towns of Azare and Jama’are are being closely monitored.

The National Flood Early Warning Center has called on stakeholders to remain vigilant and report any emerging incidents. The center’s warning is part of its efforts to mitigate the impact of flooding in Nigeria, which has experienced severe flood disasters in recent years. The warning also follows a previous alert issued for seven northern states, where communities along the flood plains of the River Niger were advised to evacuate due to rising water levels.
