A Kano Shari’a Court sentenced a 20-year-old man, Murtala Halliru, to six months in a correctional center and ordered him to receive 30 strokes of the cane for stealing 13 ceiling fans. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Halliru, a resident of Gwammaja Quarters in Kano, was convicted on a single count of theft after he pleaded guilty.
The presiding judge, Nura Yusuf-Ahmad, imposed the six-month sentence without the option of a fine and mandated that Halliru receive the corporal punishment. Additionally, the judge ordered the defendant to pay N44,000 in compensation for the stolen ceiling fans.
During the proceedings, prosecution counsel Aliyu Abideen informed the court that the theft occurred on February 23 at Kano State Polytechnic. He explained that on that day, around noon, the Chief Security Officer of the polytechnic, Sani Suleiman, apprehended Halliru while he was riding a bicycle with two ceiling fans valued at N8,000. Abideen further stated that during the investigation, Halliru confessed to stealing a total of 11 ceiling fans, which were valued at N44,000, from the polytechnic. This offense was found to contravene Section 133 of the Kano State Shari’a Law.
