The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State has accused former Attorney‑General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) of sponsoring political thugs responsible for recent violent incidents in the state. In a statement, Yahaya Sarki, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Nasir Idris, said hoodlums allegedly loyal to the ADC stormed Birnin Kebbi during Malami’s recent visit, attacking the APC secretariat and vandalising billboards of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Idris. The attackers also destroyed campaign posters, fired gunshots and caused fear among residents.
The APC condemned the incident as an attempt to disrupt the state’s long‑standing culture of peaceful politics and called on security agencies to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators. The ADC, however, maintains that Malami’s visit was a condolence mission, a claim that APC supporters and residents say is contradicted by the ensuing violence. Witnesses allege that some of the thugs were brought in from neighboring states and were armed with dangerous weapons.
Political observers warn that Kebbi, traditionally known for its peaceful political landscape, may be sliding into hostilities ahead of the 2027 elections. The incident underscores the need for security agencies to intensify investigations, restore confidence among residents and prevent further violence. As the political climate in Kebbi State continues to evolve, the actions of parties and their supporters will be closely monitored to ensure peace and stability are maintained. The upcoming elections have brought the issue of political violence to the forefront, highlighting the importance of addressing such incidents promptly and effectively to safeguard the democratic process.
