‘The Voice of Hind Rajab,’ the story of a 6-year-old killed in Gaza

A film inspired by the desperate plea of a six‑year‑old girl trapped in a bullet‑riddled car in Gaza City has premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Titled **“The Voice of Hind Rajab,”** the documentary‑style work recounts the story of Hind Rajab, who was killed in January 2024 along with five family members and two medics after contact was lost with the first ambulance that responded to the scene.

Director Kaouther Ben Hania was moved by the audio of Hind’s voice, which spread widely on social media, and felt compelled to tell her story. The film incorporates the real recording of Hind’s call while actors portray the first responders. Set entirely inside the dispatch centre of the Palestine Red Crescent Society rescue service, the narrative conveys the urgency and desperation of the situation without showing graphic images of the car or its occupants.

The incident occurred amid the Israel‑Hamas war, which the Health Ministry says has claimed over 63,000 Palestinian lives. The conflict began in October 2023 when Hamas‑led militants abducted 251 hostages and killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians. The war has devastated Gaza’s population, leaving many still trapped in the region.

Ben Hania’s film serves as a powerful tribute to Hind’s memory and a testament to the human cost of the conflict. It has already attracted high‑profile support, with Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix and Alfonso Cuarón joining as executive producers. Tunisia has submitted the film as its candidate for Best International Feature at the Oscars, and Ben Hania, a two‑time Oscar nominee for Best Documentary and Best International Feature, is poised for another awards‑season run.

The Venice premiere has sparked important discussions about the Gaza conflict and the need for greater awareness. As the film prepares for wider release, Ben Hania hopes it will reach global audiences, raising consciousness about the human toll of the war and the urgency of seeking a peaceful resolution. With its emotional storytelling, “The Voice of Hind Rajab” promises to leave a lasting impact on viewers.
