The Nigeria Police Force has refuted recent media reports claiming the arrest of individuals in Maitama, Abuja, who were allegedly found in possession of electoral materials and Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines. In a statement, the Force urged the public to disregard the “false and misconstrued narrative” being circulated by certain media outlets regarding these arrests and their supposed connection to BVAS manipulation. The police emphasized the importance of responsible journalism, encouraging reporters and media organizations to verify information before disseminating it to avoid falling victim to the “breaking news syndrome.”
Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, provided details about the incident. He explained that operatives from the Force Intelligence Bureau acted on a tip-off from local residents who reported suspicious activities in Maitama. Upon visiting the location, the officers interviewed the occupants and conducted a search of the premises. During this search, they discovered electoral materials and BVAS machines in the possession of the individuals.
Upon contacting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), it was confirmed that the occupants were staff members of Emperor Technology, a company providing engineering services to INEC. Following this clarification, the individuals were promptly released to continue their lawful activities. The police further urged the public to refrain from creating and spreading misinformation, as it could foster discontent between citizens and state actors, particularly during this critical period in the nation’s democratic process.
