NLC seeks Tinubu’s intervention — Daily Nigerian

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the dispute between the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Dangote Group. In a statement, NLC President Joe Ajaero urged the President to ensure that the Dangote Group complies with national labour laws and international conventions, and to instruct Aliko Dangote and Alhaji Sayyu Dantata to respect both domestic and global legal standards.

The appeal follows NUPENG’s announcement that it will commence a nationwide strike on Sunday, citing the Dangote Group’s “anti‑union practices, monopolistic agenda, and indecent industrial relations strategies.” The NLC has accused the conglomerate of exploiting Nigerian workers and ignoring their constitutional rights to unionise and bargain collectively. It condemned the group’s “anti‑union, anti‑worker, and monopolistic practices” and demanded the immediate unionisation of Dangote Refinery and its subsidiaries.

In preparation for a united resistance in solidarity with NUPENG, the NLC warned that it will take action if the Dangote Group persists on its “reckless anti‑union path.” The congress emphasized that the working class must not be sacrificed for corporate gain. The dispute carries significant implications for Nigeria’s energy sector and the rights of workers within the industry.

The NLC’s intervention underscores the need for strict adherence to labour laws and international conventions to protect workers’ rights and promote fair industrial practices. As the situation develops, the NLC’s call for President Tinubu’s involvement could lead either to a resolution or to further escalation, depending on the actions of the parties involved and the government’s response. The outcome will be closely watched, as it will shape the future of industrial relations in Nigeria’s energy sector.
