A recent attack in Darajamal, Bama Local Government Area, has claimed the lives of 63 people, according to Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum. The governor confirmed the tragedy during a condolence visit to the affected community on Saturday. Among the victims were five soldiers and approximately 58 civilians, many of whom had only recently returned to their homes after years of displacement.
Governor Zulum expressed his condolences to the people of Darajamal and noted that the attack occurred on Friday night, just as the community was beginning to settle back into normal life before the Boko Haram assault. He emphasized that the majority of those killed were civilians and called for additional security measures to protect vulnerable communities.
To bolster protection, the governor appealed for the immediate deployment of newly trained Forest Guards to support the military. He explained that the current military strength is insufficient to cover all at‑risk locations, and that assigning the trained Forest Guards could provide the necessary security for both communities and forests. Two batches of Forest Guards have already completed training, and their deployment is seen as a potential solution to enhancing regional security.
The Darajamal attack is a significant incident in the ongoing conflict in the area. Using Forest Guards to complement military efforts could be an important step toward improving security and safeguarding communities. As the situation continues to unfold, the deployment of these guards may play a crucial role in preventing future attacks and promoting stability in the region.
