Tonye Cole, a former Rivers State governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), has reaffirmed his commitment to the party and his intention to run for the state’s top seat in 2027. In a recent interview on Arise Television’s “Prime Time,” Cole said he will not join former Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Cole has contested the governorship twice, in 2019 and 2023, losing on both occasions, but he remains determined to become governor. He framed his upcoming bid as a third attempt, signaling his resolve to finally clinch the position after years of political engagement. While acknowledging Amaechi’s role in introducing him to politics and expressing respect for the former governor, Cole noted that Amaechi is now pursuing presidential ambitions, whereas his own focus stays on Rivers State. He emphasized that his goals and ambitions are separate from Amaechi’s and that he will not follow him to the ADC.
The relationship between Cole and Amaechi is significant, given Amaechi’s influence in Rivers State politics. A former governor and key figure in the APC, Amaechi’s decision to join the ADC has sparked interest in the state’s political landscape. Cole’s choice to remain with the APC and run for governor in 2027 sets the stage for an intriguing contest. With his experience and determination, Cole is likely to be a strong contender, and his candidacy will shape the dynamics of the 2027 election as the political environment continues to evolve.
