The All Progressives Congress (APC) expects more state governors and lawmakers to join the party ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election. National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda disclosed this during the 12th expanded stakeholders’ meeting in Bayelsa State, noting that the anticipated defections will bolster President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term.

Yilwatda, represented by Deputy National Chairman (South) Emma Eneukwu, attributed the expected defections to Tinubu’s performance in governance, which he said is attracting key political figures from opposition parties. He emphasized that the party’s doors are open to anyone willing to join and contribute to the country’s progress. Recent defections—Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, both from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC—were cited as examples of the president’s growing influence.

The chairman urged party members in Bayelsa to remain united to ensure a decisive victory in 2027. He highlighted the South‑South region’s “political maturity,” noting that governors there have abandoned their former parties to support Tinubu’s vision. Leaders from the South‑South to the South‑East, he added, are making informed decisions to back the president because of his determination to take Nigeria to greater heights.

The expected influx of new members is set to strengthen the APC’s position ahead of the 2027 election. As Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve, the party’s efforts to consolidate support and attract newcomers could have significant implications for the country’s future. With the election approaching, maintaining unity and building on current momentum will be crucial to the APC’s success.
