The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating a recent attack on former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai. Professor James Okoroma, the Imo State chairman of the ADC, warned that APC‑sponsored violence against opposition figures threatens Nigeria’s democratic system.
In an interview with Arise News, Okoroma said the hoodlums who disrupted an event attended by El‑Rufai were paid and transported in hired buses. He claimed the ADC’s independent investigation uncovered the APC’s involvement, citing the party’s concern over the ADC’s growing influence. According to Okoroma, the attackers were motivated by financial gain, pointing to evidence of hired buses and paid‑for placards.
Okoroma described the incident as part of a worrying trend of political violence in Nigeria, noting similar attacks in other states and emphasizing the destabilising effect of targeting El‑Rufai, now an influential member of the ADC coalition. He urged the APC‑led government to focus on the country’s economic challenges, poverty, and infrastructure issues rather than allegedly attacking opponents.
The episode has raised concerns about political tolerance and violence in Nigeria. As the nation navigates its democratic process, the ADC’s allegations against the APC highlight the need for political parties to promote peaceful coexistence and respect for opposition voices. The government has been called upon to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, and to address the root causes of political violence, thereby maintaining stability and fostering a healthy democratic environment.
