A northern youth group has voiced concern over the rise of politically‑motivated violence in Kebbi State, Nigeria, linking the recent unrest to the activities of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami. At a press briefing in Kaduna, Muhammad Imam, Director of Media and Public Affairs for the Northern Nigeria Youth Leaders Discussion Forum, warned that Kebbi—once regarded as a peaceful state in the region—has become increasingly unstable.

Imam alleged that Malami’s visit to Kebbi was accompanied by armed youths, leading to violent clashes that caused injuries and property damage. This account contradicts Malami’s claim that his trip was solely to offer condolences. The youth group further accused Malami of mobilising unruly crowds before the official start of political campaigns, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The forum cautioned that the use of violence as a means of political expression is spreading across northern Nigeria and must be addressed to prevent further escalation. Imam criticised security agencies for what he described as selective enforcement of law and order, noting the disparity in response between Kaduna and Kebbi states. He urged the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police to intervene promptly, emphasizing that Kebbi risks becoming a hotspot for political violence in the region.

The Northern Nigeria Youth Leaders Discussion Forum called on civil society and the media to closely monitor developments in Kebbi State, warning that inaction could embolden political actors to further destabilise the fragile peace. Their concerns highlight the need for increased attention to the rising violence and for addressing its root causes to prevent further unrest.

The situation in Kebbi State carries significant implications for regional stability, especially in the lead‑up to elections. The role of security agencies and the responsibility of political leaders to promote peace will be crucial in mitigating the risk of additional violence. As the political landscape evolves, all stakeholders must prioritise peaceful expression and respect for the law to ensure a stable and secure environment for all citizens.
