Akon divorce filed by wife Tomeka after 29 years marriage

Tomeka Thiam, the wife of renowned Senegalese-American singer Akon, has initiated divorce proceedings just days shy of their 29th wedding anniversary. According to court documents filed in Fulton County, Georgia, on September 11, 2025, Tomeka is seeking to dissolve the marriage, citing irreconcilable differences as the grounds for the separation.

The court filing, submitted on Thursday, reveals that Tomeka is requesting joint legal custody of the couple’s 17-year-old daughter, with visitation rights to be granted to Akon. Additionally, she is seeking spousal support from the singer, while concurrently asking the court to deny any similar requests from Akon.

Tomeka and Akon were married in September 1996, and their impending divorce marks the end of a nearly three-decade-long union. The couple’s daughter, who is now 17 years old, is the focal point of the custody arrangements being sought by Tomeka.

Tomeka’s decision to file for divorce comes after a prolonged period of marriage, during which Akon has become a household name in the music industry. As the separation proceedings commence, the specifics of the divorce settlement, including the division of assets and spousal support, will be determined by the court.

The divorce filing has sparked interest among fans and media outlets, given Akon’s high profile in the entertainment industry. As the case unfolds, further details regarding the separation and its implications for the couple’s personal and professional lives are likely to emerge. For now, the focus remains on the legal proceedings and the arrangements being made for the couple’s daughter.
