Federal investigators are working to establish a motive in the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while addressing students in Orem, Utah. The 31‑year‑old founder of Turning Point USA was killed on Wednesday, and 22‑year‑old Tyler Robinson has been accused of his assassination.
According to senior FBI officials, Robinson had been in a romantic relationship with a person transitioning from male to female, with whom he shared an apartment in St. George, Utah. The individual, identified as 22‑year‑old Lance Twiggs, is cooperating with authorities and is not accused of any crime in connection with the killing. Investigators are sifting through a large amount of evidence, including communications between Robinson and Twiggs, as well as links to the shooting. Text messages and Discord chats recovered from the pair’s devices have provided key leads.
A Mauser .30‑caliber bolt‑action rifle and ammunition were also recovered; some casings bore slogans and memes referencing anti‑fascist ideology and LGBTQ culture. Authorities are exploring whether Robinson was motivated by anger at Kirk’s criticism of the LGBTQ agenda and gender‑transition procedures. Utah Governor Spencer Cox described Robinson as “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology,” although Robinson’s family insists they are lifelong Republicans.
The FBI has not publicly confirmed a motive but is reviewing all evidence and pursuing every connection related to the case. Kirk’s murder has sparked a widespread investigation, prompting questions about possible motivations tied to his public views on LGBTQ issues.
