The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has reported a significant increase in passenger refunds, with a total of N257.2 million recorded between January and August 2025. This represents a substantial rise from the N108.3 million refunds recorded during the same period in 2024 and N32.8 million in 2023.
According to the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, the surge in refunds is a result of the regulator’s efforts to interface with airlines and educate air travelers on their rights. The NCAA’s consumer protection framework has led to greater adherence by airlines, despite operational challenges in the industry.
In addition to passenger refunds, hotel accommodation refunds have also increased, reaching N6.08 million by July 2025. This is based on verified reports from hotels in major cities such as Abuja, Asaba, and Lagos. The NCAA’s regulations, particularly Part 19, provide a framework for consumer protection in the aviation industry.
Achimugu noted that the growth in passenger refunds is one of the Authority’s most significant achievements in its 25-year history, demonstrating a commitment to protecting the rights of air travelers. The NCAA has pledged to continue safeguarding passenger rights, ensuring that travelers receive fair treatment and compensation when necessary.
The increase in passenger refunds reflects the NCAA’s efforts to promote consumer protection and adherence to regulatory frameworks in the aviation industry.
